After you have let your material soak in a bucket you will want to use a paddle bit on a drill to help mix it and break up any remaining chunks. You can find these paddle bits in any home improvement store, though they are usually sold for mixing paint or drywall mud. When your material is properly mixed it will resemble cake frosting, which is not very liquid, but still not at a usable consistency. Once you have attained the proper consistency, you will want to pour your clay into plaster bats to allow the excess moisture to be absorbed or evaporate. Another alternative to a paddle drill bit is an industrial mixer for breads. You want to make sure you get a relatively even thickness when you pour your clay into the bats, preferably 3 inches thick or better. It is important to remember that if you are doing several batches you will need to let the plaster bats dry out completely in between batches so that it will continue to remove excess moisture. After the excess moisture is removed you will need to process your clay before it can be used in order to assure quality when you use it. |
